Arctic Ocean Acidification Assessment: Summary for Policymakers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Executive summary of the 2013 Arctic Ocean Acidification Assessment, including an update on the state of ocean acidification in the Arctic and how that acidification is impacting on the Arctic marine environment. It outlines each of the ten key findings

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Underestimation in Self-Assessment [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 2019
To the Editor: Thank you to Dr. Karpen for the review article “The Social Psychology of Biased Self-Assessment.”[1][1] It brought to light many aspects of the biases in self-evaluation that educators should consider, including self-serving bias, biased hypothesis testing, and biased recall.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Assessment for Learning and for Self-Regulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Drawing on a research study of formative assessment practices in Irish schools, this paper traces the design, development and pilot of the Assessment for Learning Audit instrument (AfLAi) - a research tool for measuring teachers’ understanding and ...

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

THE USE OF SELF-ASSESSMENT TO FACILITATE SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING IN MATHEMATICS BY HONG KONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In a world that is constantly changing, the most important skill to acquire is learning how to learn. One of the aims of the education reform in Hong Kong is to help students to develop self-directed learning capabilities, leading to whole-person ...
