Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Self‐Healing Ionogel‐Enabled Self‐Healing and Wide‐Temperature Flexible Zinc‐Air Batteries with Ultra‐Long Cycling Lives

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Hydrogel‐based zinc‐air batteries (ZABs) are promising flexible rechargeable batteries. However, the practical application of hydrogel‐based ZABs is limited by their short service life, narrow operating temperature range, and repair difficulty. Herein, a

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Self‐healing Coatings Based on Epoxy Vitrimers

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering
The present study focuses on the development of epoxy‐based vitrimeric coatings with thermal‐healing ability. For this purpose, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EG) is crosslinked with methyl nadic anhydride (MNA) in the presence of 1‐methylimidazole (1‐

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Self-healing Tile Sets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Biology provides the synthetic chemist with a tantalizing and frustrating challenge: to create complex objects, defined from the molecular scale up to meters, that construct themselves from elementary components, and perhaps even reproduce themselves. This is the challenge of bottom-up fabrication.

Self-healing catalysis in water [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2017
Significance Water provides an attractive medium for storing solar energy via water splitting. Charge-separated states generated by solar capture may be transferred to catalysts that split water to hydrogen and oxygen. Most water-splitting catalysts comprising earth-abundant elements are susceptible to corrosion when operated in ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Self‐Healing Hydrogels: Mechanisms and Biomedical Applications

open access: yesMedComm
Hydrogels have emerged as dependable candidates for tissue repair because of their exceptional biocompatibility and tunable mechanical properties. However, conventional hydrogels are vulnerable to damage owing to mechanical stress and environmental ...
