Synthesis of an arbitrary elliptical polarization operator [PDF]
We prove a theorem for transforming the polarization eigenstates of an arbitrary elliptical birefringent device into the eigenstates of another similar device by means of a birefringent device. The theorem is applied to synthesize a specific birefringent device from a circular birefringent device, and a practical setup is described.

Making I/O Virtualization Easy with Device Files [PDF]
Personal computers have diverse and fast-evolving I/O devices, making their I/O virtualization different from that of servers and data centers. In this paper, we present our recent endeavors in simplifying I/O virtualization for personal computers. Our key insight is that many operating systems, including Unix-like ones, abstract I/O devices as device ...

What can we get “help” to observe when it comes to mobile use and mobile user experience? [PDF]
Mobile devices and mobile services have been around long enough for the research community to start thinking about the next step in studying them: larger user groups and longer periods of time.

The Case for a Single System Image for Personal Devices [PDF]
Computing technology has gotten cheaper and more powerful, allowing users to have a growing number of personal computing devices at their disposal. While this trend is beneficial for the user, it also creates a growing management burden for the user. Each device must be managed independently and users must repeat the same management tasks on the each ...

Wearable Computing for Health and Fitness: Exploring the Relationship between Data and Human Behaviour [PDF]
Health and fitness wearable technology has recently advanced, making it easier for an individual to monitor their behaviours. Previously self generated data interacts with the user to motivate positive behaviour change, but issues arise when relating ...

This work investigates modifying interfacial contacts in realizing giant‐performance semiconductor nanomembrane optoelectronics. Strategies, including surface reaction and buffer layer work‐function modulation, are explored to boost the Schottky barrier. An emerging material of YbOx is utilized for near‐ideal Ohmic contact.

IoT2Vec: Identification of Similar IoT Devices via Activity Footprints [PDF]
We consider a smart home or smart office environment with a number of IoT devices connected and passing data between one another. The footprints of the data transferred can provide valuable information about the devices, which can be used to (a) identify the IoT devices and (b) in case of failure, to identify the correct replacements for these devices.
