Why self-immolation? A qualitative exploration of the motives for attempting suicide by self-immolation

Burns, 2014
Suicide by self-immolation is one of the great health concerns in developing countries such as Iran. Exploration of motives for attempting suicide by self-immolation in different point of view of people with experience and information on can be considered as a crucial aspect in self-immolation prevention.

Self‐Immolative Polymers

Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2008
Smart polymers are special kinds of polymeric molecules that respond to external stimuli. We have developed a novel smart polymer designed to sequentially disassemble into its building blocks upon initiation by a triggering event at the polymer head. The polymer structure is based on a polyurethane backbone that disassembles through a domino-like, 1,6 ...

Self-Immolative Aryl Phthalate Esters

The Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2012
We report that aryl phthalate esters are robust self-immolative linkers. This linker is easy to conjugate and releases output phenols upon cleaving a fluoride-sensitive mask to yield a benign phthalic acid byproduct, making these linkers potentially useful as fluoride sensors and promising for use in biological and materials applications.

Self-Immolation in Afghanistan

2021
This chapter is the result of an international collaboration of mental health clinicians from Afghanistan and Malaysia and their academic counterparts from New Zealand and the United States. The lead author is an Afghan psychiatrist who studied suicidality among patients attending a mental health clinic in Herat, seeking to identify factors associated ...

Suicide attempted by self-immolation

American Journal of Psychiatry, 1975
The authors found that 14 individuals who had attempted suicide by self-immolation all had psychiatric illness (most were psychotic), and many had religious preoccupations. There was a reversal of the usual male to female ratios for burn injury and for successful suicide--all 5 completed suicides were women.

Self-Immolation: Cause and Culture

Journal of Burn Care & Research, 2008
Accounts of self-inflicted death by fire are numerous and are found from antiquity to present times. We review selected examples of self-immolation from historical record, in mythology and as part of religious and cultural tradition. We discuss the use of self-immolation as a literary device in the arts including fiction, opera, movies, and song.

Epidemiology of self-immolation

Burns, 2013
One might categorize the method of committing suicide into fatal and non-fatal methods. One of the less recognized fatal methods of suicide is self-immolation or self-burn. In this article, a fresh look at the epidemiology of self-immolation around the world is taken.
