Self-Powered Detector Response to Thermal and Epithermal Neutron Flux

Nuclear Science and Engineering, 1991
This paper reports on theoretical and experimental studies of various self-powered neutron detectors that are carried out. Among the emitter materials studied are cobalt, hafnium, erbium, silver, rhodium, and gadolinium.

Thermal and Epithermal Sensitivities of Cobalt Self-Powered Neutron Detectors

Nuclear Science and Engineering, 1993
Thermal and epithermal neutron sensitivities are calculated for cobalt self-powered neutron detectors (SPNDs). Using a reformulation of the analytical model for the calculation of the electric charge produced per neutron captured, a multiple-collision treatment for the calculation of the neutron capture rate is introduced.

Robust filtering for dynamic compensation of self-powered neutron detectors

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2014
Abstract Self-powered neutron detectors (SPNDs), which are widely used in nuclear reactors to obtain core neutron flux distribution, are accurate at steady state but respond slowly to changes in neutron flux. Dynamic compensation methods are required to improve the response speed of the SPNDs and make it possible to apply the SPNDs for core ...

The signal compensation method for the neutron flux in the measurement system using self-powered neutron detector

Review of Scientific Instruments
Self-powered neutron detectors (SPNDs) have been utilized within in-core instrumentation to measure neutron flux for control and core flux mapping in nuclear reactors. To estimate neutron flux with SPNDs, a mathematical dynamic model correlating neutron flux and SPND material has been established.

Robust Filtering for Dynamic Compensation of Rhodium Self Powered Neutron Detectors

Volume 6: Nuclear Education, Public Acceptance and Related Issues; Instrumentation and Controls (I&C); Fusion Engineering; Beyond Design Basis Events, 2014

Improved cable compensation technique for self powered neutron detectors

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1996
Abstract Measurements with cobalt self powered neutron detectors on the BR2 reactor have revealed that the currents induced by external gamma radiation can be of the same order as the neutron induced signal and that the gamma induced current on the emitter and the compensator wires are not symmetric.

Application of nuclear pumped laser to an optical self-powered neutron detector

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1996
A Nuclear Pumped Laser (NPL) using 3He/Ne/Ar gas mixture is investigated for a purpose of applying to an optical self‐powered neutron detector. Reactor experiments and simulations on lasing mechanism have been made to estimate the best gas pressure and mixture ratios on the threshold input power density (or thermal neutron flux) in 3He/Ne/Ar mixture ...

A Monte-Carlo Calculation of the Neutron Sensitivity of Self-Powered Detectors

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 1973
Self-powered (s-p) detectors are useful for incore neutron measurements in nuclear reactors because of their small size, ruggedness and simplicity. In one type of detector, a delayed current results from the beta activity induced in the device by the neutron flux while a second type gives an instantaneous response due to the compton electrons produced ...

Effect of Fission Betas, Activated Structures and Hydrogen on Self Powered Neutron Detectors

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 2013
It is shown that when vanadium Self Powered Neutron Detectors are placed too close to fuel rods, fission betas can cause a significant perturbation of the signal. It is shown that this effect can be used to measure the decrease of the fuel rod power over time due to the burn-up.

Electron Spectral Contribution of Prompt-Response Self-Powered Neutron Detectors

1989
In the present work we use a new model for calculating the effective charge induced per neutron capture in a prompt-response Self-Powered Neutron Detector (SPND). This charge is written as the integral over all possible energies of the spectral function S(E) weighted with the electron spectral contribution ∑(E).
