Pullout Performance of Self-Tapping Medical Screws
Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 2011This study investigates the effect of the pilot hole size, implant depth, synthetic bone density, and screw size on the pullout strength of the self-tapping screw using analytical, finite element, and experimental methodologies. Stress distribution and failure propagation mode around the implant thread zone are also investigated.

Pretapped and self-tapping screws in the human midface: Torque measurements and bone screw interface
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1990Better contact between AO miniscrews and the bone and greater resistance against torque are achieved in the human midface if the thread is not pretapped. This was demonstrated by 60 methacrylate fixed human midfacial bone sections and by 100 torque measurements. It is concluded that pretapping is not to be recommended in the thin bone of the midface.

Theoretical modelling of the self-tapping screw fastening process
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2001The results of a theoretical study of the self-tapping screw insertion process are presented. Fundamental concepts of engineering mechanics are employed to analyse the axial torque required to complete a general self-tapping screw insertion operation.
