Negation in Selkup

This chapter describes negation in Selkup. There are four negative markers used in different sentence types in Selkup. Negation of verbal predicates generally is based on a negative particle, but the Northern dialects use a negative existential verb in the past tense. The same negative marker is used in possessive, locational and existential sentences.

This paper presents a family legend about the great Selkup shaman Tama-ira. The legend was recounted by his great granddaughter Arina Alekseevna Tamelkina (neé Kalina) (1932–2022) in July 2013 in the town of Krasnoselkup, the centre of the Krasnoselkup district, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area.

[Polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA in Northern Selkups].

The RFLPs detected by the AvaII, BamHI, EcoRV, KpnI, HaeIII, and RsaI restriction enzymes in the D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA of the Northern Selkups were analyzed. Frequencies of the rare variants were estimated for all polymorphic sites examined. A total of 16 mitotypes were described.

[Heterozygosity and fertility in the Northern Selkup tribe].

The relationship between heterozygosity for 11 polymorphic loci and fertility of women having passed the menopause was studied in North-Siberian tribe North Selkup. Women with low level of heterozygosity were characterized by the highest values of variance of the number of livebirths and the index of early reproductive loss.
