Mind the semantic gap [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the sixteenth ACM conference on Hypertext and hypermedia, 2005
Hypertext can be seen as a logic representation, where semantics are encoded in both the textual nodes and the graph of links. Systems that have a very formal representation of these semantics are able to manipulate the hypertexts in a sophisticated way; for example by adapting them or sculpting them at run-time.

SoK: Introspections on Trust and the Semantic Gap

open access: yes2014 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, 2014
An essential goal of Virtual Machine Introspection (VMI) is assuring security policy enforcement and overall functionality in the presence of an untrustworthy OS. A fundamental obstacle to this goal is the difficulty in accurately extracting semantic meaning from the hypervisor's hardware level view of a guest OS, called the semantic gap.

Learning Unsupervised Knowledge-Enhanced Representations to Reduce the Semantic Gap in Information Retrieval

open access: yesACM Transactions on Information Systems, 2020
The semantic mismatch between query and document terms-i.e., the semantic gap-is a long-standing problem in Information Retrieval (IR). Two main linguistic features related to the semantic gap that can be exploited to improve retrieval are synonymy and ...

The Semantic Gap: An Exploration of User and Computer Perspectives in Earth Observation Images

open access: yesIEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2015
Research on the semantic gap has considered differences between user and computer image interpretations and proposed methods to bridge it. These methods have been verified by comparing results to reference data or by measuring the degree of user ...

Closing the semantic gap

Microprocessing and Microprogramming, 1988
Abstract The behaviour of a VLSI design is viewed at different levels of abstraction during the various stages of the design process. Many authors have commented that the development of a design may be viewed as a sequence of transformations between design representations at different levels of abstraction.

Bridging the semantic gap in sports

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
ABSTRACT One of the major challenges facing current media management systems and the related applications is the so-called “semantic gap” between the rich meaning that a user desires and the shallowness of the content descriptions that are automatically extracted from the media.

Shrinking the Semantic Gap: Spatial Pooling of Local Moment Invariants for Copy-Move Forgery Detection

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, 2023
Copy-move forgery is a manipulation of copying and pasting specific patches from and to an image, with potentially illegal or unethical uses. Recent advances in the forensic methods for copy-move forgery have shown increasing success in detection ...

Towards Bridging Semantic Gap to Improve Semantic Segmentation

2019 IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), 2019
Aggregating multi-level features is essential for capturing multi-scale context information for precise scene semantic segmentation. However, the improvement by directly fusing shallow features and deep features becomes limited as the semantic gap between them increases. To solve this problem, we explore two strategies for robust feature fusion. One is
