Abstract An icon always stands for something beyond itself. This chapter explores the various assumptions made by thinking of that relation in such terms as likeness, similarity, and representation that do not capture the nature of a poem as icon.

Recently I became interested in heterogeneity in collective cell migration. If some cells in a group move differenytly, how does that change the over- all group motion? For example, some cells can be more invasive in moving through tissues, which can be important in embryo development as well as cancer metastasis.

The current standard usage of the concept of affirmation is predominantly negative. It refers to an attitude that places limits on the possibilities of aesthetic cognition by affirming prevailing social conditions while failing to even register the suffering that these conditions generate.

Generalized Differential Semblance Optimization
Proceedings, 2013This paper inverts space-lags in the suboffset-domain CIGs instead of time-lags for velocity estimate. As a reminder, the conventional DSO is an image-domain method for wave-equation tomography, where the essence of this method is to focus the image at zero suboffset and minimize the image at nonzero suboffset.

“Every Semblance Of Innocence”
2023This chapter provides a further overview of the trial of Clyde Kennard. It elaborates on the testimonies of trial witnesses. The final defense witness was Kennard himself, who testified on his behalf. While there is always a risk to putting the defendant on the stand, it is possible that in this case, the defense realized that in trying a Black client ...

An investigation of the “occurrent arts” through the concepts of the “semblance” and “lived abstraction.” Events are always passing; to experience an event is to experience the passing. But how do we perceive an experience that encompasses the just-was and the is-about-to-be as much as what is actually present?

Wavelet-based semblance filtering
Computers & Geosciences, 2009Fourier transform-based semblance analysis compares two time series on the basis of their phase as a function of frequency. This approach can be extended using wavelets to allow the phase comparison of two datasets to be performed as a function of both time and wavelength.

Theodor W. Adorno died in 1969 and his last major work, Ästhetische Theorie, was published posthumously a year later. Few philosophers have been as well versed in contemporary art, especially music, as Adorno, and even fewer have written so much that is of interest to the social sciences.
