Variations of the orbital periods in semi-detached binary stars with radiative outer layers [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 1999
A detailed analysis of the period changes of six- teen semi-detached binaries which contain only stars with radiative outer layers (ET-systems) has been performed and their respective O{C diagrams are brought and dis- cussed. It was found that the course of the period varia- tions is monotonic and in some systems the period is even constant.

SuperWASP discovery and SALT confirmation of a semi-detached eclipsing binary that contains aδScuti star [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2016
We searched the SuperWASP archive for objects displaying multiply periodic photometric variations. Specifically we sought evidence for eclipsing binary stars displaying a further non-harmonically related signal in their power spectra. The object SWASP J050634.16-353648.4 is identified as a relatively bright (V ~ 11.5) semi-detached eclipsing binary ...

Space-Based Photometry of Binary Stars: From Voyager to TESS

open access: yesUniverse, 2021
Binary stars are crucial laboratories for stellar physics, so have been photometric targets for space missions beginning with the very first orbiting telescope (OAO-2) launched in 1968.

Numerical Simulation of the Surface Flow of a Companion Star in a Semi-Detached Binary System and its Application to Galactic Supersoft X-Ray Sources [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 2004
We numerically simulate the surface flow of a gas-supplying companion star in a semi-detached binary system and construct the Doppler map. Our numerical results indicate an eddy configuration composed of a Heddy, a L1-eddy, and a L2-eddy associated with high/low pressures on the surface of the companion star.

Mass-Accreting Pulsating Components of Algols

open access: yesGalaxies, 2022
We present a review of the latest results of studies of the class of mass-accreting pulsating components of semi-detached eclipsing binaries known as oEA stars.

Eclipsing Systems with Pulsating Components (Types β Cep, δ Sct, γ Dor or Red Giant) in the Era of High-Accuracy Space Data

open access: yesGalaxies, 2021
Eclipsing systems are essential objects for understanding the properties of stars and stellar systems. Eclipsing systems with pulsating components are furthermore advantageous because they provide accurate constraints on the component properties, as well

Maximum mass ratio of AM CVn-type binary systems and maximum white dwarf mass in ultra-compact X-ray binaries [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2011
AM CVn-type stars and ultra-compact X-ray binaries are extremely interesting semi-detached close binary systems in which the Roche lobe filling component is a white dwarf transferring mass to another white dwarf, neutron star or a black hole ...
