Under the cover of darkness: Foraging behaviour increases on cloudy, new moon nights in a pelagic seabird

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
While many visual predators feed exclusively during the day, others exploit foraging opportunities at night, although the efficiency with which they do so is strongly influenced by ambient light levels. We investigated the influence of variation in nocturnal light on the foraging behaviour of a small pelagic seabird, the European Storm‐petrel ...

Floral resource availability and surrounding land cover influence bumble bee community composition in an agricultural landscape

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Multispecies occupancy models indicated that the occurrence of bumble bees was associated with local floral resources as well as the landscape surrounding a site within 1.6 km. Estimated species richness was greater at sites with more forest cover and lower at sites with more corn and soybean agriculture in the surrounding landscape.

A Non‐Parametric Framework for Correlation Functions on Product Metric Spaces

open access: yesInternational Statistical Review, EarlyView.
Summary We propose a non‐parametric framework for analysing data defined over products of metric spaces, a versatile class encountered in various fields. This framework accommodates non‐stationarity and seasonality and is applicable to both local and global domains, such as the Earth's surface, as well as domains evolving over linear time or time ...

Genetic Determination of Maternal Behaviour in Pigs

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In sows, maternal behaviour is a commercially important trait which affects sow and piglet welfare and the quality and safety of human‐animal interactions, especially if free farrowing of sows without crates is in place. The aim of this study was to evaluate maternal behaviour and to estimate its quantitative genetic parameters in Swiss ...

Modelling relationships between juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) density and landscape characteristics: Integration of electrofishing data and spatial data to assess population status

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) are ecologically and economically important, but like many salmonids their populations are declining. Trout exhibit a high level of phenotypic plasticity, ranging from freshwater residency to anadromy. This complexity causes problems for assessment and constrains application of adult catch‐based assessment methods
