On Semi-Markov Modelling and Inference for Multi-state Systems

2016 Second International Symposium on Stochastic Models in Reliability Engineering, Life Science and Operations Management (SMRLO), 2016
In this work we focus on multi state systems that we model by means of semi-Markov processes. The sojourn times are seen to be independent not identically distributed random variables and assumed to belong to a general class of distributions that includes several popular reliability distributions like the exponential, Weibull, and Pareto.

Duration Dependent Semi-Markov Models

2011
In this paper it is shown how to construct duration dependent semi- Markov models. The in uence of backward and forward recurrence time processes on the transition probabilities of a non-homogeneous continuous time semi-Markov process (NHCTSMP) is considered.

Semi‐Markov Models with Phase‐Type Sojourn Distributions

Biometrics, 2009
Summary Continuous‐time multistate models are widely used for categorical response data, particularly in the modeling of chronic diseases. However, inference is difficult when the process is only observed at discrete time points, with no information about the times or types of events between observation times, unless a Markov assumption is made.

Hidden Semi-Markov Models for Semantic-Graph Language Modeling

Journal of the Franklin Institute
Semantic communication is expected to play a critical role in reducing traffic load in future intelligent large-scale sensor networks. With advances in Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques, design of semantically-aware systems has become feasible in recent years.

Semi-Markov models for human-resource modelling

IMA Journal of Management Mathematics, 1992
Summary: For human-resource modelling, models of wastage -- such as the lognormal model -- ignore the variations in leaving rates between grades, while models of the grade structure -- such as the Markov model -- ignore duration dependence in the rates of movement to other grades or leaving.

On the Second Optimality Equation for Semi-Markov Decision Models

Mathematics of Operations Research, 1992
For a semi-Markov decision model with average return, the validity of the second optimality equation is shown in the (nonmodified) form where the actions run through the set of all admissible actions rather than through the set of maximum points (conserving actions) for the first optimal equation.
