Semicircular canal biomechanics in health and disease

open access: yesJournal of Neurophysiology, 2018
The semicircular canals are responsible for sensing angular head motion in three-dimensional space and for providing neural inputs to the central nervous system (CNS) essential for agile mobility, stable vision, and autonomic control of the ...

Low‐Concentration Electrolytes Based on Weakly Coordinating Anions for Applications in Lithium‐Ion‐Batteries and Lithium‐Metal‐Batteries

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Big is beautiful? The performance of 0.2 M low concentration lithium electrolytes with large weakly coordinating anions [Al{OC(CF3)3}4]− and [Ga(C2F5)4]− in low viscosity ortho‐difluorobenzene solution is tested in comparison to standard 1.0 M as well as diluted 0.2 M carbonate‐based electrolytes with Li[PF6] conducting salt.

Spectrum of Third Window Abnormalities: Semicircular Canal Dehiscence and Beyond

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Neuroradiology, 2017
SUMMARY: Third window abnormalities are defects in the integrity of the bony structure of the inner ear, classically producing sound-/pressure-induced vertigo (Tullio and Hennebert signs) and/or a low-frequency air-bone gap by audiometry.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a multi-center study

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology, 2022
Background Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most frequent vestibular disorder with significant morbidity, psychosocial impact, and medical costs.

Video Head Impulse Tests with a Remote Camera System: Normative Values of Semicircular Canal Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex Gain in Infants and Children

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2017
The video head impulse test (VHIT) is widely used to identify semicircular canal function impairments in adults. But classical VHIT testing systems attach goggles tightly to the head, which is not tolerated by infants.

Semicircular canal plane head impulses detect absent function of individual semicircular canals [PDF]

open access: yesBrain, 1998
We studied the human vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in response to head 'impulses': brief, unpredictable, passive, high-acceleration (up to 4000 degrees/s2), low-amplitude (20-30 degrees) head rotations. We delivered the head impulses approximately in the plane of the semicircular canal (SCC) being tested.

Design and analysis of HSC-BPPV diagnostic maneuver based on virtual simulation

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2023
BackgroundThe preferred supine roll test for the diagnosis of horizontal semicircular canal BPPV has several disadvantages, including difficulty in locating the affected ear, inconsistent nystagmus performance on repeated testing, and lack of a typical ...

Technique of Multi-Planar CT Image Reconstruction for the Evaluation of Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Syndrome

open access: yesPhilippine Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, 2011
Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo that was first identified by Minor in 1998. The patients initially described by Minor presented with vertigo, oscillopsia, and/or dysequilibrium related to sound ...

Semicircular canals in Anolis lizards: ecomorphological convergence and ecomorph affinities of fossil species [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2017
Anolis lizards are a model system for the study of adaptive radiation and convergent evolution. Greater Antillean anoles have repeatedly evolved six similar forms or ecomorphs: crown-giant, grass-bush, twig, trunk, trunk-crown and trunk-ground.

Auditory Hair Cell Mechanotransduction Channels Dynamically Shape the Mechanical Properties of Their Membrane Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work shows, for the first time, that the stereocilia membrane in cochlear hair cells is dynamically regulated by the mechanotransduction channel to impact the membrane mechanical properties. This work provides direct evidence that the opening and closing associated with the MET channel is regulating the membrane viscosity suggesting that the MET ...
