A generalization of some Huang-Johnson semifields

open access: yesElectron. J. Comb., 2011
The seven Huang-Johnson semifields are semifields of order 64 with left nucleus of order 8 and center of order 2, which will be referred as the Huang-Johnson semifields of type II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII. The authors have investigated the question whether these sporadic examples are contained in larger families. They prove that the Huang-Johnson

Perfect nonlinear binomials and their semifields

open access: yesFinite Fields and Their Applications, 2009
The authors show that the binomial \[ F(x) = x^{p^s+1}-u^{p^k-1}x^{p^k+p^{2k+s}}\tag{b} \] is a perfect nonlinear (PN) mapping on \(\text{GF}(p^n)\) if \(p\) is an odd prime, \(n=3k\), \(\gcd(3,k) = 1\), \(k \equiv s \bmod 3\), \(n/\gcd(s,n)\) is odd and \(u\) is a primitive element of \(\text{GF}(p^n)\). The APN-ness of binomials of this shape for \(p=

On translation hyperovals in semifield planes

open access: yesDesigns, Codes and Cryptography
In this paper we demonstrate the first example of a finite translation plane which does not contain a translation hyperoval, disproving a conjecture of Cherowitzo. The counterexample is a semifield plane, specifically a Generalised Twisted Field plane, of order $64$. We also relate this non-existence to the covering radius of two associated rank-metric
