Organic Semiosis and Peircean Semiosis
Biosemiotics, 2012The discovery of the genetic code has shown that the origin of life has also been the origin of semiosis, and the discovery of many other organic codes has indicated that organic semiosis has been the sole form of semiosis present on Earth in the first three thousand million years of evolution. With the origin of animals and the evolution of the brain,

Mimesis quite often serves as a means of communication between people or animals, and it should be compared with another form of communication, grounded not upon imitation but upon exchange of signs. The very notion of mimesis should be revised in order to re-place the mimesis of representation (artistic or not) by a mimesis of communication which ...

This chapter considers how, the sacrifice Du Bois advocates calls us to embrace a love of living, of fulfillment in community of the living, without any proprietary claims. It is what we might call improper-love, love that does not seek to comprehend the other; it does not bring the object of love into grasp, into the fold of a proper self, but ...

The paper argues for sufficient semiosis as a comprehensive set of constraints within which language functions. As a generalisation of Leibniz’s sufficient reason, sufficient semiosis replaces truth-conditional semantics. The paper opens with a series of ontological commitments about language, that sentence-types have only token potential, sentence ...

This chapter argues that reality, both material and conceptual, functions as a complex network of continuous adaptive morphological formation. The morphological form is a well-formed form (wff), a Sign. It materializes as this informational form within a function, an irreducible triad, where f(x)=x models the three procedures of input/mediation/output.

We present a recursive differential formalism by which physical law emerges as stabilized torsion within differentiation itself. The Bergsonian operator B_Ψ ≡ ∇ ⋄ D_Ψ formalizes recursive differentiation-of-differentiation as the generative act from which the known gauge structure condenses.
