The paper argues for sufficient semiosis as a comprehensive set of constraints within which language functions. As a generalisation of Leibniz’s sufficient reason, sufficient semiosis replaces truth-conditional semantics. The paper opens with a series of ontological commitments about language, that sentence-types have only token potential, sentence ...

Semiosis is cognitive niche construction
Semiotica: Journal of the International Association for Semiotic Studies, 2019Here we describe Peircean post-1903 semiosis as a processualist conception of meaning, and relate it to contemporary active externalism in Philosophy of Cognitive Science, especially through the notion of cognitive niche construction.

This chapter argues that reality, both material and conceptual, functions as a complex network of continuous adaptive morphological formation. The morphological form is a well-formed form (wff), a Sign. It materializes as this informational form within a function, an irreducible triad, where f(x)=x models the three procedures of input/mediation/output.

This paper explores the mutual implication of critical realism and semiosis (or the intersubjective production of meaning). It argues that critical realism must integrate semiosis into its account of social relations and social structuration. This goes well beyond the question of whether reasons can be causes to include more basic issues of the ...

The 'state of literature' in a visual culture is analyzed against the background of a theoretical semiotic framework based upon the distinction between three types of signs: one-place images, two-place symbols, and three-place structures. It is argued that literature is linguistic mimetic meta-representation. The semiotic perspective allows us to deal,
