Abstract There are few words in the philosophical lexicon so slippery as ‘will’. In an attempt to track a history of the idea of will, the most we have going for us is a widely agreed upon lexical correspondence. In modern European languages, so far as I know, we can at least pick out counterparts: will, volonte´, volonta`, Wille.
