Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid–Containing Toxic Plants (Senecio, Crotalaria, Cynoglossum, Amsinckia, Heliotropium, and Echium spp.)

open access: yesVeterinary Clinics of North America - Food Animal Practice, 2011
Pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA)-containing plants are found throughout the world and are probably the most common plant cause of poisoning of livestock, wildlife, and humans. PAs are potent liver toxins that under some conditions can be carcinogenic. This article briefly introduces high-risk North American PA-containing plants, summarizing their toxicity ...

Effects of ensiling conditions on pyrrolizidine alkaloid degradation in silages mixed with two different Senecio spp.

open access: yesArchives of Animal Nutrition, 2022
Pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) producing plants like Senecio jacobaea or Senecio vernalis are undesirable in fields for forage production, since PA are toxic to animals and humans. Previous studies have shown that ensiling can decrease the PA content in forages; however, no direct comparison of diverse PA from different Senecio spp. under various ensiling

Niche Segregation Between Black‐Necked Crane and Common Crane in Human‐Modified Landscape, Huize Black‐Necked Crane National Nature Reserve, Yunnan Province, Southwestern China [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We investigated how Black‐necked Cranes and Common Cranes coexist in agro‐wetland landscapes of southwest China by reconstructing their plant‐based diets using eDNA metabarcoding. Black‐necked Cranes maintained broad, stable diets centered on natural vegetation, while Common Cranes shifted dynamically to energy‐dense crops, leading to progressive niche
