Leopold Sédar Sengor (1906–2001) was a Senegalese poet, the first president of independent Senegal, founder of the Francophonie and the first dark-skinned member of the French Academy. Together with Aimé Césaire and Léon Damas, Senghor defined the concept of negritude in response to the extreme dominance of French culture in the colonies.
