Purification and characterization of a novel cholesterol-lowering protein from the seeds of Senna obtusifolia

"Juemingzi", a source of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has been demonstrated to play a role in decreasing serum cholesterol concentration. In this study, a novel protein, which has shown an inhibitory effect on cholesterol biosynthesis, was isolated from Senna obtusifolia L. seed by gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography.

The antifungal activity of crude methanolic leaf extract of closely related Senna obtusifolia and Senna tora of family Caesalpiniaceae was evaluated by growth inhibition analysis on four phytopathogenic fungi viz. Alternaria helianthii, Pythium aphanidermatum, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus niger.
