Too much and not enough data: Challenges and solutions for generating information in freshwater research and monitoring

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Evaluating progress toward achieving freshwater conservation and sustainability goals requires transforming diverse types of data into useful information for scientists, managers, and other interest groups. Despite substantial increases in the volume of freshwater data collected worldwide, many regions and ecosystems still lack sufficient data

Towards a global understanding of tree mortality

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 245, Issue 6, Page 2377-2392, March 2025.
Summary Rates of tree mortality are increasing globally, with implications for forests and climate. Yet, how and why these trends vary globally remain unknown. Developing a comprehensive assessment of global tree mortality will require systematically integrating data from ground‐based long‐term forest monitoring with large‐scale remote sensing.

Detecting selective logging in tropical forests with optical satellite data: an experiment in Peru shows texture at 3 m gives the best results

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 11, Issue 1, Page 100-118, February 2025.
Selective logging is known to be widespread in the tropics, but is currently very poorly mapped. To improve this, we used in‐situ measurements of aboveground biomass loss (∆AGB) collected from selectively logged permanent sample plots in the southern Peruvian Amazon.

Aridity and forest age mediate landscape scale patterns of tropical forest resistance to cyclonic storms

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 1, Page 53-67, January 2025.
These findings show that selection towards drought‐tolerant traits across aridity gradients, such as short stature and dense wood, enhances resistance to hurricanes. However, forest age modulated responses to hurricanes, with older forests being less resistant across the islands.

Surface water quality in Amazonian Floodplain Lakes, data set of the Lago Grande de Curuai Floodplain Lake, Pará‐Brazil

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 11, Issue 3, Page 252-266, July 2024.
The data set contains surface water quality parameters in a large Amazonian floodplain. The data were acquired through nine field campaigns organized between March 2013 and April 2017. A minimum of 25 fixed stations were visited during each campaign. Vertical profiles obtained by a multiparameter probe at each station are also available.
