Environmental Controls on the Riverine Export of Dissolved Black Carbon

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 33, Issue 7, Page 849-874, July 2019., 2019
Abstract Each year, tropical rivers export a dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flux to the global oceans that is equivalent to ~4% of the global land sink for atmospheric CO2. Among the most refractory fractions of terrigenous DOC is dissolved black carbon (DBC), which constitutes ~10% of the total DOC flux and derives from the charcoal and soot (aerosol)

Towards a global understanding of tree mortality [PDF]

open access: yesnew phytologist
Summary Rates of tree mortality are increasing globally, with implications for forests and climate. Yet, how and why these trends vary globally remain unknown. Developing a comprehensive assessment of global tree mortality will require systematically integrating data from ground‐based long‐term forest monitoring with large‐scale remote sensing.

SpiderATLAS: A Database of Spider Traits and Distributions in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Biodiversity shortfalls related to limited knowledge about geographic distribution (Wallacean) and species traits (Raunkiæran) are extremely common in many animal groups and perhaps more evident in invertebrate groups such as spiders. This lack of knowledge could present challenges for researchers investigating the response and effects of ...

Environmental and Evolutionary Forces Shaping Penguin Geographic Limits

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Penguins are seabirds exclusively found in the Southern Hemisphere, with their existence dating back to the late Cretaceous. Despite their exceptional dispersal capabilities, which allow them to inhabit a wide range of environments—from polar regions to temperate zones, and even near the Equator—penguins are absent in the Northern ...
