Recent Advances of Slip Sensors for Smart Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent progress in robotic slip sensors across mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, magnetic, and acoustic mechanisms, offering a comprehensive reference for the selection of slip sensors in robotic applications. In addition, current challenges and emerging trends are identified to advance the development of robust, adaptive,

Anchoring symbols to sensorimotor control [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This paper investigates how robots may emerge a lexicon to communicate complex meanings about actions such as `I am going to the red target' using simple (one-word) utterances. The main issue of the paper concerns the way these complex meanings represent

Causal connectivity of evolved neural networks during behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
To show how causal interactions in neural dynamics are modulated by behavior, it is valuable to analyze these interactions without perturbing or lesioning the neural mechanism.

The Future of Research in Cognitive Robotics: Foundation Models or Developmental Cognitive Models?

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Research in cognitive robotics founded on principles of developmental psychology and enactive cognitive science would yield what we seek in autonomous robots: the ability to perceive its environment, learn from experience, anticipate the outcome of events, act to pursue goals, and adapt to changing circumstances without resorting to training with ...

Hand Grasping Synergies As Biometrics

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2017
Recently, the need for more secure identity verification systems has driven researchers to explore other sources of biometrics. This includes iris patterns, palm print, hand geometry, facial recognition, and movement patterns (hand motion, gait, and eye ...

Pulsed Facilitation of Corticospinal Excitability by the Sensorimotor μ-Alpha Rhythm

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 2019
Alpha oscillations (8–14 Hz) are assumed to gate information flow in the brain by means of pulsed inhibition; that is, the phasic suppression of cortical excitability and information processing once per alpha cycle, resulting in stronger net suppression ...

Discovering Communication [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
What kind of motivation drives child language development? This article presents a computational model and a robotic experiment to articulate the hypothesis that children discover communication as a result of exploring and playing with their environment.

Backpropagation Through Soft Body: Investigating Information Processing in Brain–Body Coupling Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study explores how information processing is distributed between brains and bodies through a codesign approach. Using the “backpropagation through soft body” framework, brain–body coupling agents are developed and analyzed across several tasks in which output is generated through the agents’ physical dynamics.

Cortical signatures of vicarious tactile experience in four-month-old infants

open access: yesDevelopmental Cognitive Neuroscience, 2019
The human brain recruits similar brain regions when a state is experienced (e.g., touch, pain, actions) and when that state is passively observed in other individuals.

Disengaging the Engine: Histone Deacetylases 1 and 2‐Mediated Acetylation of Hexokinase‐2 Regulates Energy Metabolism in Microglia Following Intracerebral Hemorrhage

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that HDAC1/2 knockout in microglia alleviates neurological deficits, preserves white matter, and accelerates hematoma clearance after ICH. HDAC1/2 inhibition reduces HK2 acetylation, shifts metabolism from glycolysis to fatty acid oxidation, reduces inflammation, and enhances phagocytosis.
