Multifunctional Microstructured Surfaces by Microcontact Printing of Reactive Microgels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Reactive poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) microgels are used as functional inks to create surface‐grafted arrays on glass via microcontact printing. The patterns (10–50 µm widths and spacings) enable stable binding and post‐functionalization with dyes and peptides.

Triggers, Protectors, and Predictors in Episodic Migraine. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A wide variety of triggers prompt attacks in episodic migraine. Although experimental triggers such as glyceryl trinitrate reliably produce migraine, natural triggers are much less predictable and vary in importance between individuals.

Germanane Quantum Dots Promote Metabolic Reprogramming of Immune Cells Toward Regulatory T Cells and Suppress Inflammation In Vitro and In Vivo

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metabolic changes in immune cells direct the phenotype and function of the host immune system. Smart nanomaterials must target metabolic pathways to direct immune cell fate. This study reports the fabrication and first application of germanane quantum dots (GeHQDs) to modulate inflammation in vitro and in vivo.

Selection pressure and organizational cognition: implications for the social determinants of health [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We model the effects of Schumperterian 'selecton pressures' -- in particular Apartheid and the neoliberal 'market economy' -- on organizational cognition in minority communities, given the special role of culture in human biology.

Visual Outcomes of Amblyopia Therapy

open access: yesPhilippine Journal of Ophthalmology, 2012
Objective: To determine the visual outcome of amblyopia treatment and describe the relationship between age of onset and consult, compliance as measured by a patch diary, amblyopia subtype, and severity with the final visual outcome.
