Configurable 3D Rowing Model Renders Realistic Forces on a Simulator for Indoor Training

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
In rowing, rowers need outdoor and indoor training to develop a proficient technique. Although numerous indoor rowing machines have been proposed, none of the devices can realistically render the haptic, visual, and auditory characteristics of an actual ...

Control of intracellular pH and bicarbonate by CO2 diffusion into human sperm

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
The reaction of CO2 with H2O to form bicarbonate (HCO3 −) and H+ controls sperm motility and fertilization via HCO3 −-stimulated cAMP synthesis. A complex network of signaling proteins participates in this reaction.

Plasticity in invertebrate sensory systems [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2013
The Research Topic presented in this issue of Frontiers in Invertebrate Physiology is on Plasticity in Invertebrate Sensory Systems and comprises a total of eight articles. These cover various aspects of sensory plasticity observed not only at the level of neurons but also in behavioral adaptations that result from plastic changes in the nervous system.

Multifocal imaging for precise, label-free tracking of fast biological processes in 3D

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Multifocal imaging suffers from a number of limitations. Here the authors report an open-source 3D reconstruction algorithm to enable label-free tracking of spherical and filamentous structures which they use to characterise fluid flow and flagellar ...

Heterogeneity in the Global Practice of Central Nervous System Staging in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is assessed by cell counting and cytomorphology from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is used for treatment stratification worldwide. The ratio of “CNS2” patients in clinical trials ranges from 3% to 40%, with unclear prognostic significance ...

The Role of Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Ataxia‐Telangiectasia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Ataxia‐telangiectasia (A‐T) is a DNA repair disorder characterized by neurodegeneration, immunodeficiency, and cancer predisposition. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is an established therapy in related disorders such as Fanconi anemia (FA) and Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS), but its role in A‐T is unclear.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Effect of Darkness on Intrinsic Motivation for Undirected Singing in Bengalese Finch (Lonchura striata Domestica): A Comparative Study With Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata)

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
The zebra finch (ZF) and the Bengalese finch (BF) are animal models that have been commonly used for neurobiological studies on vocal learning. Although they largely share the brain structure for vocal learning and production, BFs produce more complex ...
