The ESA Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration in Crete: Advanced Services and the Latest Cal/Val Results

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Two microwave transponders have been operating in west Crete and Gavdos to calibrate international satellite radar altimeters at the Ku-band. One has been continuously operating for about 8 years at the CDN1 Cal/Val site in the mountains of Crete, and ...

Controlling banana bunchy top disease in Benin: Crop protection strategies with socio‐economic perspectives

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Banana and plantain are vital for food security and income in West Africa, yet banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) threatens production. This study combined remote sensing, field surveys, modelling and socio‐economic analysis to assess BBTV spread and control strategies in Benin.

Tropical forest degradation in the context of climate change: increasing role and research challenges. [K-2215-01] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
While developed countries in temperate regions faced their forest transition about 100 years ago or more, “tropical forest rich” nations still largely depend on forest resources or land clearing for their development.

Medicane characteristics from high‐resolution satellite radar observations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study uses high‐resolution observations from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to reveal that medicanes, cyclones with tropical features in the Mediterranean basin, have dynamical characteristics with attributes comparable with those of tropical cyclones of similar intensities, but smaller outer sizes and Rossby numbers.

Estimation of Coastal Wetland Vegetation Aboveground Biomass by Integrating UAV and Satellite Remote Sensing Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Aboveground biomass (AGB) serves as a crucial indicator of the carbon sequestration capacity of coastal wetland ecosystems. Conducting extensive field surveys in coastal wetlands is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)

All‐sky assimilation impacts of the Tomorrow.io microwave sounder constellation on global weather forecasts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Key Findings: An assimilation methodology is established for the Tomorrow.io microwave sounder (TMS) flying on CubeSats in sun‐synchronous and inclined orbits, and in all cloud scenes. The TMS has a significant impact on weather forecast lead times up to 3 days in the Tropics in a research‐quality numerical weather prediction setting, and yields water ...

The Use of Sentinel-2 Vegetation Indices Imagery in Detecting the Effect of Plant Distance to the Productivity of Corn Crops [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
There are several variations in planting distance used for corn plants, including 70×40 cm, 70×20 cm, and irregular. This affects the productivity of corn plants because of competition between corn plants.

Assimilation of solar‐induced fluorescence satellite observations in the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts integrated forecast system

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates the potential of the assimilation of satellite solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF) retrievals at eight‐day and 0.1° resolutions in the integrated forecast system (IFS), developed at the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), at global scale, to provide a more realistic representation of the vegetation temporal ...

Improving satellite imagery segmentation using multiple Sentinel-2 revisits

open access: yes
In recent years, analysis of remote sensing data has benefited immensely from borrowing techniques from the broader field of computer vision, such as the use of shared models pre-trained on large and diverse datasets. However, satellite imagery has unique features that are not accounted for in traditional computer vision, such as the existence of ...
