Pathobiology of the sentinel node
Current Opinion in Oncology, 2008Lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy have been established as definitive procedures for the staging of cutaneous melanoma. Large-scale studies that have been recently conducted and that are ongoing suggest a therapeutic role for lymphatic mapping/sentinel node biopsy in the management and prognosis of melanoma patients with early lymph node

What is a sentinel node and what is a false-negative sentinel node?
Annals of Surgical Oncology, 2004Morton's original definition of a sentinel node as the first lymph node to receive afferent lymphatic drainage from a primary tumor reflects the concept of stepwise spread of cancer through the lymphatic system. Several new definitions have been developed, based on surgical anatomy and on the technique that is used to find the node.

To examine whether the intraoperative combined injection technique is feasible in locating the sentinel node(s) of the ovary. In 16 patients with high-risk uterine cancer and normal postmenopausal ovaries, technetium isotope and blue dye were injected in the right or left ovary during laparotomy, respectively.

Omitting Axillary Dissection in Breast Cancer with Sentinel-Node Metastases.
New England Journal of MedicineBACKGROUND Trials evaluating the omission of completion axillary-lymph-node dissection in patients with clinically node-negative breast cancer and sentinel-lymph-node metastases have been compromised by limited statistical power, uncertain nodal ...

Can interpectoral nodes be sentinel nodes?
The American Journal of Surgery, 1999This study was designed to determine if interpectoral nodes could be sentinel nodes for some breast cancers.Thirty-five consecutive breast cancer patients undergoing axillary node dissection had a dissection of the interpectoral nodes. These were sent to pathology as a separate specimen.Three patients were identified with isolated interpectoral nodal ...

The theory of lymphatic spread of cancer represents a basic chapter in the book of modern oncology. It was Cabanas (Cancer 39(2):456–466, 1977) in 1977 who introduced in the clinical practice the sentinel lymph node dissection (SLND) to stage penile carcinoma.

The Sentinel Node in Anal Carcinoma
Tumori Journal, 2002Aims and Background Anal cancer is a rare condition. The inguinal lymph nodes are the most common site of metastasis in this neoplasm. The inguinal lymph node status is an important prognostic indicator and the presence of metastases is an independent prognostic factor for local failure and overall mortality.

AbstractThe management of the axilla has become a topic of debate with the introduction of sentinel node excision. Comparisons between sentinel node biopsy and axillary dissection have shifted from histologic staging to regional recurrence rates. Advances in adjuvant therapy have occurred during this time period and likely represent a contributing ...

Sentinel Node for Gastrointestinal Malignancies [PDF]
Sentinel node (SN) concept is valid in gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies. The dual tracer method with radio-guided and dye-guided SN mapping is feasible in GI malignancies and is useful in detecting unexpected aberrant drainage routes from GI cancers.
