Applications of a Planar Separator Theorem

SIAM Journal on Computing, 1977
Any n-vertex planar graph has the property that it can be divided into components of roughly equal size by removing only $O(\sqrt n )$ vertices. This separator theorem, in combination with a divide-and-conquer strategy, leads to many new complexity results for planar graph problems. This paper describes some of these results.

On Sturm's Separation Theorem

Canadian Mathematical Bulletin, 1972
The purpose of this note is to obtain an extension of the classical Sturm separation theorem for the second order, linear selfadjoint differential equation1to the case of a noncompact interval. The classical theorem (cf. [3, p. 209], [4, p. 224]) assumes that r and s are continuous with r positive on a compact interval I, and concludes that between ...

An Extension of the Roots Separation Theorem

Annals of Operations Research, 2001
The interlacing of the eigenvalues of a symmetric tridiagonal matrix and its submatrix obtained by deleting its first row and its first column (or its last row and its last column) is known. The paper extends this to deleting the \(k\)th row and the \(k\)th column.

SHEAF RECURSION AND A SEPARATION THEOREM

The Journal of Symbolic Logic, 2014
AbstractDefine a second order tree to be a map between trees (with fixed codomain). We show that many properties of ordinary trees have analogs for second order trees. In particular, we show that there is a notion of “definition by recursion on a well-founded second order tree” which generalizes “definition by transfinite recursion”.

Separation of metric in Wick’s theorem

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2023
In quantum chemistry, Wick’s theorem is an important tool to reduce products of fermionic creation and annihilation operators. It is especially useful in computations employing reference states. The original theorem has been generalized to tackle multiconfigurational wave functions or nonorthogonal orbitals.
