Dynamical tunneling across the separatrix
The strong enhancement of tunneling couplings typically observed in tunneling splittings in the quantum map is investigated. We show that the transition from instanton to noninstanton tunneling, which is known to occur in tunneling splittings in the space of the inverse Planck constant, takes place in a parameter space as well.

Analysis and expansion of the quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime in ASDEX Upgrade
The quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime, formerly known as either type-II ELM or small ELM regime is studied in ASDEX Upgrade. The regime is a natural type-I ELM-free H-mode.

We report Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of large amplitude, parallel, electrostatic, proton plasma frequency waves on the magnetospheric side of the reconnecting magnetopause. The waves are often found in the magnetospheric separatrix region and

A NEW APPROACH TO THE TREATMENT OF SEPARATRIX CHAOS [PDF]
We review an approach to separatrix chaos that has allowed us to solve some significant problems by: (i) finding analytically the maximum width of the chaotic layer, a problem that lay unsolved for 40 years, and showing that the maximum may be much larger than had previously been assumed; (ii) describing the drastic facilitation of the onset of global

Effect of Initial Conditions on the Behavior of Two-Electrode MEMS with Variable Interelectrode Gap [PDF]
The influence of initial conditions on the behavior of two-electrode microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) having parallel-plate and comb structures with variable interelectrode gap is studied and analyzed here within a nonlinear approach.

On the ion distributions at the separatrices during symmetric magnetic reconnection
A particle-in-cell simulation of symmetric reconnection with zero guide field is carried out to understand the dynamics of ions along the separatrices. Through the investigation of ion velocity distributions at different moments and locations along the ...

Whistler mode waves and Hall fields detected by MMS during a dayside magnetopause crossing
We present Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission measurements during a full magnetopause crossing associated with an enhanced southward ion flow. A quasi‐steady magnetospheric whistler mode wave emission propagating toward the reconnection region with ...

Experimentally, it has been observed in high-confinement (H-Mode) plasmas with Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) on JET that the pressure pedestal (pe,ped) is degraded by approximately a factor of two when there is a change in electron separatrix density, ne ...

On the role of separatrix instabilities in heating the reconnection outflow region [PDF]
A study of the role of microinstabilities at the reconnection separatrix can play in heating the electrons during the transition from inflow to outflow is being presented.
