Diagnosis of septic joint can be a problem for both the clinician and the imager. The longer the delay in diagnosis of a septic arthritis, the greater the chance of significant complication. Many imaging modalities are available to the imager and each plays a definite role.

SEPTIC ARTHRITIS IN CHILDREN [PDF]
Because of its seriousness, septic arthritis should be considered early in the differential diagnosis of any child presenting with joint inflammation. Physicians who care for children should be aware of the early signs and symptoms of septic arthritis and be aggressive about establishing the diagnosis so that treatment is not delayed.

This chapter describes a rational approach to septic arthritis based on sound principles of pathology and therapeutics. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential if normal function of the infected joint is to be restored. In any acute joint disease, infection must be suspected, and if present, detected.
