Endoscopic Septoplasty

Endoscopic septoplasty (ES) is gaining in popularity as surgeons come to appreciate the many advantages this procedure possesses compared to the traditional open approach. We present our experience and discuss advantages and disadvantages of ES. Particular attention is given to the use of ES in the correction of nasal valve obstruction.

Septoplasty in Children

In their article Bejar et al 1 state that they perform external septoplasty on children with severe nasal obstruction caused by septal deviation anterior to the nasal spine. They conclude that external septoplasty does not affect most aspects of nasal and facial growth, except growth of the nasal dorsum.

Aesthetic sequelae of septoplasty

This prospective study, using standardized pre- and post-operative photographs examined by three independent observers, included 100 septoplasty patients with a minimal follow up of 9 months. A risk of minimal aesthetic changes (21%) could be documented, but significant post-operative changes (1%) were rare.

The effective correction of septal deviations either by manipulation during early infancy or by septoplasty after the age of 5 years ensures normal anatomy of nasal and facial structures, normal physiology of upper respiratory tract and healthy development of the child. The septal deviation detected at birth should be corrected by manipulation.
