Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Quantifying Time-averaging in 4th-order depositional sequences: radiocarbon-calibrated amino-acid racemization dating of Late Quaternary Mollusk Shells from Po Plain, Italy

open access: yes, 2008
Quantitative estimates of time-averaging (age mixing) in the Holocene marine successions of Po Plain were obtained by direct dating of individual specimens of the corbulid bivalve Lentidium mediterraneum sampled across the 4th-order depositional sequence.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Points accessible in average by rearrangement of sequences

open access: yes, 2018
We investigate the set of limit points of averages of rearrangements of a given sequence. We study how the properties of the sequence determine the structure of that set and what type of sets we can expect as the set of such accessible points.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Multi-Channel Piecewise Selective Averaging of Cognitive Evoked Potentials With Variable Latency

open access: yes, 2007
This work is about the development of an alternative way of averaging evoked potentials (EP) of cognitive activities. Since the main assumption of invariant waveforms time locked to the eliciting events does not hold for cognitive EPs, averaging results ...

Predicted missing information biases ensemble perception of temporally ordered facial expressions

open access: yesScientific Reports
By observing dynamically changing facial expressions, humans can use a specialized capacity known as ensemble coding to effortlessly obtain a summary representation of an individual’s emotional state.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...
