Biodegradation of nitrobenzene by aerobic granular sludge in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR)

Desalination, 2011
Abstract The biodegradation of nitrobenzene by aerobic granular was investigated in this study. After cultivation in feeding-increasing form, nitrobenzene was degraded as sole carbon and nitrogen resource by aerobic granular sludge cultivated in SBR reactor and was not inhibited by nitrobenzene concentration up to 600 mg/L.

Removal of Pb2+ and Ni2+ by bio-sludge in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and granular activated carbon-SBR (GAC-SBR) systems

Bioresource Technology, 2007
Living bio-sludge from domestic wastewater treatment plant was used as adsorbent of heavy metals (Pb(2+), Ni(2+)) and its adsorption capacity was about 10-30% reduced by autoclaving at 110 degrees C for 10 min. The living bio-sludge acclimatized in synthetic industrial estate wastewater (SIEWW) without heavy metals showed the highest Pb(2+) and Ni(2 ...

Treatment of Milking Center Wastewater Using a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)

2006 Portland, Oregon, July 9-12, 2006, 2006
Treatment of Milking center wastewater whose soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was adapted to around 2000mg/L was studied in a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor. Simultaneous biological organic matter and nutrient removal was investigated under nine operational conditions including three hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and three different ...

Coliphages as a rapid indicator of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment performance

Environmental Toxicology and Water Quality, 1995
AbstractGenerally, conventional tests for total and fecal coliforms take from 1 to 4 days before the results are available. In contrast, the coliphage method is a simple, rapid, economical, and reliable method that has been used as an additional indicator of potential pathogens whereby coliform numbers present in natural waters can be estimated within ...

Treatment of molasses wastewater by acetogenic bacteria BP103 in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system

Bioresource Technology, 2008
Acetogenic bacteria BP103 cells could be used as the absorbent for melanoidin pigment (MP) and molasses wastewater (MWW). The maximum MP adsorption yield of this strain observed from the dead (autoclaved) cell. It was two times higher than that with resting cells.

Influence of the type and source of inoculum on the start-up of anammox sequencing batch reactors (SBRs)

Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2013
Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) is an attractive option for the treatment of wastewaters with a low carbon/nitrogen ratio. This is due to its low operating costs when compared to the classical nitrification-denitrification processes. However, one of the main disadvantages of the Anammox process is slow biomass growth, meaning a relatively slow ...

Effect of cycle changes on simultaneous biological nutrient removal in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR)

Environmental Technology, 2010
The destabilization of a microbial population is sometimes hard to solve when different biological reactions are coupled in the same reactor as in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). This paper will try to guide through practical experiences the recovery of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in an SBR after increasing the demand of wastewater ...

Study of Nitrogen and Organics Removal in Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) Using Hybrid Media

Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2003
The removal of nitrogen and organics in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using hybrid media were investigated in this work. The hybrid media was made by the use of polyurethane foam (PU) cubes and powdered activated carbon (PAC). The function of activated carbon of hybrid media was to offer a suitable active site, which was able to absorb organic ...

Investigation of multiphase flow in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) by means of hybrid methods

Chemical Engineering Science, 2007
Abstract An analysis of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) from a fluid mechanical point of view, used in the cultivation of granular activated sludge (GAS), is carried out by experimental, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and artificial neuronal networks (ANN) methods.
