In this paper, we focus on the design of optimized binary convolutional codes (CCs) and serially concatenated convolutional codes (SCCCs) in the presence of a-priori information (API) at the receiver. First, we propose a design criterion for CCs based on the minimization of the bit error proabability (BEP).

Flexible blocks for high throughput serially concatenated convolutional codes
Proceedings of the 17th ACM Great Lakes symposium on VLSI, 2007Modern communication systems aim to integrate different services including telephony, multimedia applications and data transfer. This integration imposes to design flexible systems, able to support different frame duration and data-rates. In this paper we present several blocks employed in serially concatenated convolutional codes and we detail some ...

Interleaver Design for Serially Concatenated Convolutional Codes: Theory and Application
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2004This paper addresses the problem of interleaver design for serially concatenated convolutional codes (SCCCs) tailored to the constituent codes of the SCCC configuration. We present a theoretical framework for interleaver optimization based on a cost function closely tied to the asymptotic bit-error rate (BER) of the block code C/sub s/ resulting from ...

Serially concatenated convolutional coding for an optical PPM/CDMA system
The 6th International Conference on Advanced Communication Technology, 2004., 2004In this paper, performance of on optical PPM/CDMA system with SCCC is analyzed and simulated. It is assumed that optical channel is on intensity modulated (IM) channel and direct-detection scheme is employed to defect the received optical signal. The modulation scheme used is pulse-position-modulation (PPM). The performance is evaluated in terms of bit

Serial concatenation schemes for space-time and recursive convolutional codes
The 57th IEEE Semiannual Vehicular Technology Conference, 2003. VTC 2003-Spring., 2004Serial concatenation scheme with a space-time trellis code as the outer code and recursive convolutional codes as the inner code are compared. A new encoding/decoding structure characterized by the inner encoding by a single recursive convolutional code and the combined decoding of simultaneous symbols from multiple antennas is proposed, which gives a ...

Iterative decoding of serially concatenated convolutional codes applying the SOVA
VTC '98. 48th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. Pathway to Global Wireless Revolution (Cat. No.98CH36151), 2002In numerous researches, the soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) has been used for the iterative decoding of a parallel concatenated convolutional code (PCCC) instead of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding algorithm having a suboptimal bounds to the maximum likelihood (ML) performance.

Serially concatenated continuous phase modulation with ring convolutional codes
International Symposium onInformation Theory, 2004. ISIT 2004. Proceedings., 2004Serially concatenated continuous phase modulation (SCCPM) systems with ring convolutional codes (CC) are investigated. Both EXIT chart and union bound techniques are used to compare with the simulation results and are used as analysis tools. The latter is for the first time generalized to a nonbinary interleaver for a serially concatenated system ...

On Permutor Designs Based on Cycles for Serially Concatenated Convolutional Codes
IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2004A new permutor design for serially concatenated convolutional codes is presented. It is based on the construction of a permutation matrix without short cycles of special types. For such a permutor, we give a lower bound on the minimum distance of the overall code that is significantly larger than that achievable with first-order separation (spreading ...

On the Design of S-type Permutors for Double Serially Concatenated Convolutional Codes
2006 IEEE Information Theory Workshop, 2006In this paper the impact of S-type permutors, i.e., permutors that provide a non-trivial separation, on the minimum distance of double serially concatenated convolutional codes is considered. A joint design of the outer and inner permutor is presented on the basis of a newly introduced permutor parameter - the so-called symbol span.
