Longitudinal monitoring of cattle infected by bluetongue virus serotype 3 on a commercial Holstein dairy farm in the Netherlands

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Since September 2023, bluetongue virus serotype 3 has been circulating in the Netherlands. Cattle can exhibit a range of clinical signs from sub‐clinical to severe, but they are also known to play an important role as a virus reservoir in bluetongue epidemics.

Salmonellosis in lambing ewes with associated human infection

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Salmonellosis in sheep is an infrequent diagnosis, but outbreaks do occur with abortion, diarrhoea and death possible sequelae. In this case, affecting a flock of 4000 ewes, Salmonella typhimurium definitive phage type 104 was isolated from clinical cases and a variety of environmental samples taken from the farm.

Treatment of Neurogenic Voice Disorders

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This overview serves as a foundational resource for clinicians caring for neurologically complex patients presenting with voice complaints. Neurogenic voice disorders are diverse in their clinical presentations and therapeutic approaches. A thorough medical history, including family history, detailed laryngeal examination, voice assessments ...

Selective Enrichment of Full AAV Capsids [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Gene therapies using recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) have been developed to treat monogenic and acquired diseases but are currently the most expensive drugs due, in part, to high manufacturing costs. The cells producing rAAV generate substantial quantities of empty (50-90%) and partially filled capsids that must be removed prior to final ...

Spasmodic Dysphonia

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Spasmodic dysphonia is a laryngeal dystonia that can present as adductor, abductor, or mixed types, with or without tremor. The etiology is not understood fully. Comprehensive evaluation is required to establish the diagnosis. Treatments include voice therapy, medications, botulinum toxin injection, laryngeal surgery, deep brain stimulation ...

Periodontal microbiology and microbial etiology of periodontal diseases: Historical concepts and contemporary perspectives

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract This narrative review summarizes the collective knowledge on periodontal microbiology, through a historical timeline that highlights the European contribution in the global field. The etiological concepts on periodontal disease culminate to the ecological plaque hypothesis and its dysbiosis‐centered interpretation.

An Atypical Kappa‐Class Chaperone‐Usher Fimbriae of a Human Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Strain Shows Multi‐Host Adherence and Distinct Phylogenetic Feature

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, Volume 69, Issue 5, Page 270-279, May 2025.
ABSTRACT The pathogenesis of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) involves the colonization of hosts by colonization factors (CFs) and the secretion of enterotoxins. CFs, especially chaperone‐usher fimbriae, mediate bacterial adhesion to host cells, with extensive genetic diversity observed among isolates.

Weakened Airway Epithelial Junctions and Enhanced Neutrophil Elastase Release Contribute to Age‐Dependent Bacteremia Risk Following Pneumococcal Pneumonia

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2025.
During spread of Streptococcus pneumoniae from the lung to the bloodstream, the pneumococcal pore‐forming toxin pneumolysin (PLY) disrupts apical junction complexes (AJCs) and triggers the transmigration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), which secrete tissue‐destructive neutrophil elastase.

Astrocytic Hevin/SPARCL‐1 Regulates Cognitive Decline in Pathological and Normal Brain Aging

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2025.
Hevin/Sparcl‐1 is a synaptogenic protein secreted by astrocytes. We used adeno‐associated virus (AAV) to increase its expression in hippocampal astrocytes of APP/PSEN1 mice, an animal model for Alzheimer's disease (AD). This procedure improved cognitive performance both in the AD model and in middle‐aged wild‐type animals.
