Serpentinites and serpentinites within a fossil subduction channel : La Corea mélange, eastern Cuba

open access: yesGeologica Acta, 2011
A variety of metaultramafic (serpentinite) rocks in La Corea mélange, Sierra de Cristal, eastern Cuba, show differences in chemical, textural and mineralogical characteristics demonstrating a variety of protoliths. The mélange originated during the Cretaceous as part of the subduction channel associated with the Caribbean island arc.

Serpentinites and serpentinites: Variety of origins and emplacement mechanisms of serpentinite bodies in the California Cordillera

open access: yesIsland Arc, 2017
AbstractMost serpentinitized peridotite in orogenic belts is derived from oceanic lithosphere, but the emplacement mechanisms of these rocks vary greatly, as illustrated by the nature of these rock bodies and their contacts. The diverse emplacement mechanisms have important implications for connecting ophiolitic rock occurrences to large‐scale orogenic

Troodos: A Giant Serpentinite Diapir

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geosciences, 2011
Troodos is a classical ophiolite complex. It is proposed that the serpentinized harzburgites that now form the top of the mountain and represent the originally lowest part of the ophiolite sequence rose as a diapir. This diapiric rise is caused by the pervasive serpentinization of a suboceanic harzburgite, due to rock-sea water interaction.

Heat transport in serpentinites

open access: yesTectonophysics, 2003
Abstract The thermal transport properties thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity were examined for a variety of serpentinites as a function of temperature at ambient pressure. The thermal transport properties of serpentinites show an extraordinary behavior.

Serpentinite Slurries against Forest Fires

open access: yesOpen Journal of Forestry, 2015
Forest Fires Are One of the Commonest Natural Hazards. Forest Fires Make the largest Contribution to Co2 Emissions After the Burning of Fossil Fuels. Here a New technology is Proposed to Extinguish Forest Fires Not with Water, but with a Slurry of Serpentine.
