Parapatric speciation of Meiothermus in serpentinite-hosted aquifers in Oman

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
The factors that control the distribution and evolution of microbial life in subsurface environments remain enigmatic due to challenges associated with sampling fluids from discrete depth intervals via boreholes while avoiding mixing of fluids.

Nature of serpentinite interactions with low-concentration sulfuric acid solutions

open access: yesGreen Processing and Synthesis
The nature of serpentinite interaction with low-concentration sulfuric acid solutions is studied. Using IR-Fourier spectroscopy, X-ray, and serpentinite leaching with sulfuric acid solutions containing 10–60% of stoichiometrically required amount (SRA ...

Electrical conductivity of magnetite‐bearing serpentinite during shear deformation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2012
Electrical conductivity of serpentinite with various amounts of magnetite was measured during shear deformation at high pressure and temperatures (P = 1.0 GPa, T = 750 K) corresponding to mantle wedge conditions to evaluate the contribution of aligned ...

Potencial uso de serpentinito no armazenamento mineral do CO2

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2013
Rising anthropogenic CO2 emissions are considered a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. There are several options for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels, and among these alternatives, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been identified as an ...

Troodos: A Giant Serpentinite Diapir

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geosciences, 2011
Troodos is a classical ophiolite complex. It is proposed that the serpentinized harzburgites that now form the top of the mountain and represent the originally lowest part of the ophiolite sequence rose as a diapir. This diapiric rise is caused by the pervasive serpentinization of a suboceanic harzburgite, due to rock-sea water interaction.

Fluid‐Driven Shear Instabilities in the Subducted Oceanic Mantle at Intermediate Depths: Insights From Western Alps Meta‐Ophiolites

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Serpentinites are major carriers of volatiles in deep subduction zones, releasing most fluids in the 500–650°C range. Despite fundamental implications for mass transfer and intermediate‐depth seismicity, the mechanical role of these fluids is unclear. To
