Community-informed and codesigned research to understand the impacts of railways on wildlife. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Trains cause mortalities of several animal species, but the ecological impacts of railways are understudied. Most research on wildlife–train collisions has focused on large mammals, but understanding railway‐specific risks for underrepresented taxa, especially vulnerable species, is important for developing effective mitigation strategies ...

Extinction debt and functional traits mediate community saturation over large spatiotemporal scales

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 92, Issue 11, Page 2228-2239, November 2023., 2023
This study is the first to simultaneously evaluate whether (1) community saturation can require lengthy timespans to be reached and (2) there is a limit to the number of ecological strategies that can coexist. Determining if these ideas are supported is fundamental for better understanding the possible outcomes of species invasions and climate change ...

“The universal word speaks only in dialect”

open access: yesThe Ecumenical Review, Volume 73, Issue 4, Page 495-508, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Postcolonial theories announce an “exit”: the departure from the West as the world’s centre of gravity and from Eurocentric hegemonic claims of superiority, turning away from the universal, and placing unheard voices at the centre – those who are excluded from academic, public, and political discourse. Such stories and histories of the margins

The value and limitations of local ecological knowledge: Longitudinal and retrospective assessment of flagship species in Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 3, Issue 3, Page 627-638, June 2021., 2021
Abstract Anthropogenic activities and climate change are affecting marine ecosystems world‐wide, but systematic biodiversity assessments through periodic biomonitoring can be challenging and costly. Local ecological knowledge (LEK), obtained from experienced residents, can complement other approaches and provide improved understanding of the ...

Geography of roadkills within the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot: Poorly known vertebrates are part of the toll

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 820-830, May 2021., 2021
We analyzed wildlife roadkill patterns along a road network between tree protected areas in the Andes of Ecuador. Roadkills included poorly known small and endemic vertebrates, such as caecilians (Gymnophiona) and fossorial snakes (Atractus spp.). Most roadkills occurred in areas where roads crossed pasturelands adjacent to natural habitat.
