Host–parasite interaction between branchiurans (Crustacea: Argulidae) and piranhas (Osteichthyes: Serrasalminae) in the Pantanal wetland of Brazil

Ecological studies of host–parasite interactions in the tropics are generally restricted to descriptive taxonomic aspects. The present study had as its objective identification of the metazoan ectoparasites of piranhas Pygocentrus nattereri, Serrasalmus spilopleura and S. marginatus in lentic and lotic environments in the Pantanal region, Brazil.

The red-bellied piranha belongs to the Pygocentrus genus, and is a representative of the Serrasalmidae family. The P. nattereri is the most abundant species in the floodplain of the Solimoes-Amazonas river system. In the present work, 11 microsatellite loci were developed and used to investigate the genetic variation on 35 wild individuals.

El número diploide de cromosomas 2n=60 estuvo compuesto de 30 metacéntricos, 16 submetacéntricos, 4 subtelocéntricos y 10 acrocéntricos (NF=110). Fueron detectados cuatro pares de cromosomas portadores de NOR.

Supplementary description and rehabilitation of Tometes trilobatus Valenciennes, 1850, type-species of Tometes Valenciennes (Characidae: Serrasalminae)

Tometes trilobatus est une espèce différente de Myleus setiger. Tometes est un genre proche de Mylesinus, Ossubtus et du sous-genre Myleus (Myleus) avec lesquels il partage plusieurs caractères uniques chez les Serrasalminae. Les os des mâchoires sont laminaires et les séries de dents du prémaxillaire sont étroitement accolées les unes aux autres.
