Acoustic homogeneity in the piranha Serrasalmus maculatus
Journal of Fish Biology, 2021AbstractDifferent studies suggest some social calls could be used in fish identification if their specificity is unambiguously assessed. Sounds of different populations of piranhas Serrasalmus maculatus Kner, 1858 were recorded to determine their homogeneity between rivers inside a single basin (Araguari and Grande River, upper Paraná River basin) and ...

Metazoan endoparasites of Serrasalmus marginatus (Characiformes: Serrasalminae) in the Negro River, Pantanal, Brazil [PDF]
In order to inventory the metazoan endoparasites of Serrasalmus marginatus, 91 specimens were examined. They were captured in the Negro River in Pantanal wetland, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-Western Brazil, from October 2007 to August 2008.

Species polyphyly and mtDNA introgression among three Serrasalmus sister-species [PDF]
Understanding the processes that generated pattern of DNA variation in natural populations may be a difficult task. Since migration and gene flow may superimpose to genetic drift and divergence, evolutionary forces responsible of shared polymorphism may be difficult to identify (Pamilo and Nei, 1988; Nielsen and Wakeley, 2001).

Connections of the olfactory bulb in the piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri)
Cell and Tissue Research, 1981The connections of the olfactory bulb were studied in the piranha using the Nauta and horseradish-peroxidase methods. Three olfactory tracts project to seven terminal fields in the telencephalon and one in the diencephalon, all of them bilaterally. The contralateral olfactory bulb also receives a small input.

Double cone mosaic pattern in the retina of larval and adult piranha,Serrasalmus spilopleura
Experientia, 1992The mosaic pattern of double cones of retinas in larval and adult piranha,Serrasalmus spilopleura, was examined. Samples from two habitats in the same reservoir, characterized by different light conditions, were examined. The same square pattern was found in all sampled retinas indicating that, for this species, there is no apparent relation between ...

Afferent connections of the optic tectum in the piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri)
Cell and Tissue Research, 1983Injections of horseradish peroxidase into the optic tectum of the piranha resulted in retrograde transport to the following structures bilaterally: the central telencephalic nucleus, four hypothalamic nuclei, the caudal part of the dorsomedial optic nucleus, the ventral nucleus of the torus semicircularis, the torus longitudinalis, the perilemniscal ...

Eye movements evoked from telencephalic stimulations in the piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri)
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1985The telencephalon of spinally transsected, unanesthetized piranhas was systematically stimulated with microelectrodes to scan for eye movement inducing (EMI) sites which were then identified by histological means. EMI sites were found clustered in several distinct central and medial telencephalic areas.
