Attack preferences of the red-bellied piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri)

Animal Behaviour, 1972
Abstract Single small piranha ( Serrasalmus nattereri ) were exposed once per day for 30 consecutive days to a single comet goldfish ( Carassius auratus ) as large or larger than the piranha. The area of the goldfish's body first attacked and time to first attack were recorded. In 87·9 per cent of the trials, first attack was in the tail area.

A Comparative Cytogenetic Study of Five Piranha Species (Serrasalmus, Serrasalminae) from the Amazon Basin

Genetica, 2002
Cytogenetic studies were conducted on five piranha species belonging to the genus Serrasalmus, subfamily Serrasalminae (Serrasalmus altispinis, S. compressus, S. elongatus, S. manuelli, and S. spilopleura). Ultrastructural aspects of oogenesis and oocyte primary growth in Serrasalmus spilopleura (Teleostei, Characiformes, Characidae)

Tissue and Cell, 2001
The ultrastructural characteristics of the organelles present in Serrasalmus spilopleura oogonia and oocytes undergoing primary growth were described in detail, considering its role in the nuclear and cytoplasmic metabolic processes that occur in these cell types.

Attacks on humans by the piranhaSerrasalmus rhombeusin Suriname

Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment, 2006
Piranhas have a reputation of being man‐eating fishes, notwithstanding the absence of well‐documented records of piranha attacks on human beings. Reproduction in the piranha Serrasalmus spilopleura, a neotropical fish with an unusual pattern of sexual maturity

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1996
Reproduction in female Serrasalmus spilopleura (Characiformes, Characidae) from the Itumbiara reservoir (18°28′ S, 48°36′ W), Paranaiba River, Brazil, was examined with emphasis on the relationship between condition factors and coelomic fat, the annual reproductive cycle and the unusual dynamics of its sexual maturity. The condition factor and coelomic

Stomach Content of Juvenile and Adult Piranhas (Serrasalmus marginatus) in the Paran Floodplains, Brazil

Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment, 1998
The piranha, Serrasalmus marginatus is an abundant fish in the floodplains of the upper ParanaÝ river. We studied the stomach content of juvenile and adult piranhas over a year and determined the food items. Fragments of fish were the main diet components with age-dependent differences. There was no seasonal variation in the prey.
