2010
Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef bvre) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a serious pest of wild and cultivated plants with particular preference in maize and sweet sorghum. In the present study, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the oviposition preference among cultivated and wild host plants.

Effects of Sublethal Concentrations of Bacillus thuringiensis on Larval Development of Sesamia nonagrioides

Journal of Economic Entomology, 2005
In the Mediterranean Basin, developed diapausing larvae of the borer Sesamia nonagrioides Lefèbvre are found consistently during autumn in transgenic corn, Zea mays L., expressing Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) toxins derived from event 176. These larvae can feed on sublethal concentrations of Bt toxins because the expression of this corn toxin ...

Dispersal capacity in the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides

Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 2004
AbstractCorn (Zea mays L.) borers are the primary target of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) transgenic maize. Management of corn borer resistance to Bt requires information on larval and adult dispersal capacities, a feature that is particularly unknown in Sesamia nonagrioides Lefèbvre (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), the most damaging corn borer in ...

Mating behaviour of the corn stalk borer Sesamia nonagrioides

Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 1992
AbstractThe mating behaviour of the corn stalk borer Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.) [Lepidoptera: Noctuidae] was studied under laboratory conditions at 25 ± 1 ° C, 65 ± 5 % r.h. and 16:8 (L:D) regime. The females began calling during the first scotophase following emergence, the peak of calling occurred during the second scotophase and thereafter ...

The molecular and physiological impact of bisphenol A in Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Ecotoxicology, 2014
In the present study we investigated the potential relative effects of bisphenol A (BPA) and RH-5992 (tebufenozide) on the development and metamorphosis of the corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A number of morphological and molecular factors were examined in order to identify the toxic and the endocrine-relative action of

Juvenile hormone esterase activity in the pupating and diapausing larvae of Sesamia nonagrioides

Journal of Insect Physiology, 2008
The development of the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides, under long-day (LD) photoperiod is associated with juvenile hormone (JH) decline and pupation in the 5th or 6th larval instar. The larvae grown under short-day (SD) conditions maintain a moderate JH titer and enter diapause during which they undergo several extra larval molts.

Evaluation of rice for resistance to pink stem borer (Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebre)

Field Crops Research, 2000
Abstract The pink stem borer (Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebre) is one of the most important rice pests in the Mediterranean area. The objective of this study was to identify rices resistant to pink stem borer and to determine plant characteristics associated with resistance.

Note: Corn stalk borer (Sesamia nonagrioides) infestation on sorghum in central Greece

Phytoparasitica, 2007
Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) was introduced recently into Greece and is being cultivated experimentally for the production of liquid biofuel. A pilot survey was conducted in October 2005 to provide information on the species composition and density of its lepidopterous stem borers, which appear to cause severe losses in production.
