A walk in the park—Identifying healthy greenspaces using scents

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
As urbanisation accelerates globally, access to nature is increasingly recognised as vital for public health and wellbeing. We captured and analysed plant‐emitted airborne ‘scent signatures’ across Oxford's urban greenspaces to assess their potential health relevance.

How does leaf age affect performance? A comparative study of essential oils from young and mature Eucalyptus globulus leaves in crop protection

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Leaf age influences metabolomic profiling but not bioactivity of Eucalyptus globulus essential oils. Leaf age affects volatile levels of young and adult E. globulus oils, but not their bioactivity. Young leaf essential oil had higher contents of α‐ and β‐pinene. AEEO had higher levels of 1,8‐cineole and trans‐pinocarveol.

Three sesquiterpenes from Artemisia annua

open access: yes, 1998
The dried leaves of Artemisia annua, collected from Sichuan Province in Southern China, have yielded an unusual cadinane sesquiterpene oxygenated at the 7-position and a novel eudesmane sesquiterpene, in addition to several known sesquiterpenes and ...

Testing optimal defense theory: Root resistance selection in chicory (Cichorium intybus) reduces foliar defense and alters aphid performance and feeding behavior

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Root‐focused resistance in chicory reduces defenses in leaves, impairing root aphids but enhancing foliar aphid performance. Selecting root resistance can create unintended trade‐offs across plant organs. Abstract BACKGROUND Plants are constantly exposed to a wide range of herbivores at both aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) levels, involving ...

How sesquiterpenes modulate signaling cascades in cancers

open access: yes, 2016
Data obtained from high-throughput technologies has started to shed light on the interplay between signal transduction cascades and chromatin modifications thus adding another layer of complexity to the already complex regulation of the protein network ...

Stability studies of cynaropicrin–major sesquiterpene lactone of Cynara cardunculus leaves

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This study investigated its stability under high temperature and pH, mimicking agronomic extremes and under soil context. Bioassays demonstrated that degradation products exhibited higher phytotoxic activity than cynaropicrin and deacylcynaropicrin. This is the first study about cynaropicrin's stability, characterizing degradation products, and their ...
