Homework: To set or not to set…

Headteacher Update, 2012
While one union has branded homework a waste of time, many others argue the benefits. With government guidelines scrapped, Dorothy Lepkowska looks at the pros and cons of setting homework

On IP* sets and central sets

Combinatorica, 1994
IP* sets and central sets are subsets of ℕ which are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We establish here that structure is significantly richer that was previously known. We also establish that multiplicatively central sets have rich additive structure.

Set, Setting, and Matrix

Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 1997
The future use of psychedelics as an aid to therapeutic change is bound to come. The best source of information on how to use these extraordinary drugs is clearly a detailed description of the successes (and failures) of those researchers who have used these compounds to bring curative, creative and growth-potentiating experiences to their patients.

Automatic sets and Delone sets

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 2004
Delaunay subsets of \(\mathbb{R}^m\) are sets that are both uniformly discrete and relatively dense. These sets can be considered as abstract quasi-crystals. The authors characterize automatic sets (in the sense of \textit{F. von Haeseler} [Automatic sequences (de Gruyter Expositions in Mathematics 36, Berlin, Walter de Gruytes) (2003; Zbl 1057.11015)]

The set of injections and the set of surjections on a set

Mathematical Logic Quarterly
AbstractIn this paper, we investigate the relationships between the cardinalities of the set of injections, the set of surjections, and the set of all functions on a set which is of cardinality , denoted by , and , respectively. Among our results, we show that “”, “” and “” are provable for an arbitrary infinite cardinal , and these are the best ...

Complementary Sets of Finite Sets

Monatshefte fr Mathematik, 2003
Given an additive group \(G\) and \({\mathcal A}\subset G\), a set \({\mathcal S}\subset G\) is called complementary to \(\mathcal A\) in \(G\) if \({\mathcal A}+{\mathcal S}=\{a+s:a\in{\mathcal A}, s\in{\mathcal S}\}=G\). In the paper the groups \(\mathbb Z\), \({\mathbb Z}/(m{\mathbb Z})\), \(\mathbb R\), and \({\mathbb R}/{\mathbb Z}\) are ...

Rough Sets and Vague Sets

2007
The subject-matter of the consideration touches the problem of vagueness. The notion of the rough set, originated by Zdzislaw Pawlak, was constructed under the influence of vague information and methods of shaping systems of notions leading to conceptualization and representation of vague knowledge, so also systems of their scopes as some vague sets ...

Rough Sets

International Journal of Computer & Information Sciences, 1982
Summary: We investigate in this paper approximate operations on sets, approximate equality of sets, and approximate inclusion of sets. The presented approach may be considered as an alternative to fuzzy set theory and tolerance theory. Some applications are outlined.
