Abstract By the year 2000?” Frank Drake laughs. “When I started saying that, the year 2000 seemed a long way off! I’m starting to weasel out of that now—but there’s still a chance.”

AbstractSETI from space is currently envisaged in three ways: i) by large space antennas orbiting the Earth that could be used for both VLBI and SETI (VSOP and RadioAstron missions), ii) by a radiotelescope inside the Saha far side Moon crater and an Earth-link antenna on the Mare Smythii near side plain.

Radio Telescopes for SETI searches are less demanding than general purpose astronomical radio telescopes. This provides an opportunity to exploit economical approaches in designing SETI systems. Radio Telescopes in low Earth orbit offer no discernible advantages to SETI; indeed, they probably would perform more poorly than a telescope in any other ...

Abstract While most optical SETI experiments are configured to detect nanosecond pulses, the majority of their counterpart radio searches integrate for seconds to minutes, looking for unchanging narrow-band carriers or slowly pulsed modulation. The former approach is suggested as an effective way to stand out against stellar photon noise, while the ...

SETI at the Nançay radiotelescope
Acta Astronautica, 1983The Nancay (France) radiotelescope has been used in June, 1981, to search for artificial monochromatic signals from 102 nearby stars, without success. A different approach to SETI is also considered based on the properties of wide band signals. A detection procedure, through Karhunen-Loeve analysis, is suggested.

SCIENCE, SETI, AND MATHEMATICS
2013Mathematics is as much a part of our humanity as music and art. And it is our mathematics that might be understandable, even familiar, to a distant race and might provide the basis for mutual communication. This book discusses, in a conversational way, the role of mathematics in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Abstract We on Earth and intelligent beings elsewhere in our galaxy can single out each other as special targets for communication if our stars have common properties, and can thus perhaps be stimulated to broadcast and listen directionally to try to give the coincidence between sending and listening that is necessary.

A mathematical model for evolution and SETI
Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres, 2011Darwinian evolution theory may be regarded as a part of SETI theory in that the factor f(l) in the Drake equation represents the fraction of planets suitable for life on which life actually arose. In this paper we firstly provide a statistical generalization of the Drake equation where the factor f(l) is shown to follow the lognormal probability ...

The “Lunar Farside Radio Lab” Study of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), started in 1998 by late French astronomer Jean Heidmann (1923-2000), underwent substantial extensions and revisions since its coordination was taken up by this author.

Abstract The distribution of radio bands to various users is a very difficult task internationally.
