Probiotics and Severe Acute Pancreatitis
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, 2008Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory process ranging from mild forms to severe disease with high rates of mortality. In this disease, enteral nutrition helps in maintaining the integrity of the gut barrier, with consequent decreased bacterial translocation, a key factor in limiting the complications in severe AP.

Abstract In the UK acute pancreatitis is being diagnosed with increasing frequency. 25% of patients develop the severe form of the disease and are at risk of developing multiorgan failure. Serum amylase is a poor indicator of severity. Contrast enhanced CT scanning has now become the radiological investigation of choice.
