Structural Design and Immunogenicity of a Novel Self‐Adjuvanting Mucosal Vaccine Candidate for SARS‐CoV‐2 Expressed in Plants

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mucosal vaccination for COVID‐19 to boost preexisting though insufficient systemic and local/mucosal immunity remains an attractive prospect but there are currently no licensed mucosal vaccines against this infection. Here, using a plant expression system, we developed a novel mucosal vaccine platform for respiratory viruses and demonstrated ...

Reactive oxygen species are involved in inhibition of photoreactivation of Staphylococcus aureus irradiated with 222‐nm Far ultraviolet C

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
222‐nm Far UV‐C has a bactericidal effect and is less harmful to humans than 254‐nm UV‐C. This study investigated photoreactivation of Staphylococcus aureus irradiated with 222‐nm Far UV‐C. The proliferative effect of 222‐nm UV‐C irradiated S. aureus by photoreactivation was lower than with 254‐nm UV‐C.

Virus inactivation and skin safety studies using far‐UVC LEDs

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
This study uses an LED exposure system with a peak output at 233 nm to examine efficacy for inactivation of human coronavirus as well as potential health hazards for human exposure. Abstract Reducing airborne disease transmission is a public health goal.

Investigation of 222‐nm ultraviolet C irradiation bactericidal effect on the surgical field in a rabbit model

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
In a rabbit surgical field model seeded with polymicrobial flora, a single dose of 222‐nm UV‐C (500 mJ/cm2) markedly reduced bacterial colonies, achieving a bactericidal effect comparable to 254‐nm UV‐C (200 mJ/cm2), while no UV‐C irradiation showed heavy growth. Wound healing did not differ among groups. Microbiota profiling detected SSI‐relevant taxa

Coupling wastewater‐based epidemiology with data‐driven machine learning for managing public health risks

open access: yesRisk Analysis, EarlyView.
Abstract Traditional health surveillance methods play a critical role in public health safety but are limited by the data collection speed, coverage, and resource requirements. Wastewater‐based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a cost‐effective and rapid tool for detecting infectious diseases through sewage analysis of disease biomarkers.
