Advances in the management of severe aortic stenosis

Irish Journal of Medical Science (1971 -), 2016
Recent developments in the management of severe aortic stenosis have resulted in a paradigm shift in the way we view the condition. Patients previously denied intervention in the form of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) are now candidates for transcatheter aortic valve implantation and the risk and age profiles of those undergoing SAVR are ...

Severe Aortic Stenosis

Abstract Patients with suspected or poorly defined valvular heart disease should undergo echocardiography preoperatively to quantify the severity. The risk of noncardiac surgery can be minimized by choosing an anesthetic approach appropriate to the valvular heart disease and considering a higher level of perioperative monitoring.

Myocardial Fibrosis in Severe Aortic Stenosis

Current Cardiology Reports, 2010
European and American guidelines for the management of patients with aortic stenosis use left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), aortic valve area (AVA), and transvalvular pressure gradient to grade severity and prognosis. However, these measurements depend on stroke volume and sometimes correlate poorly with symptoms.

Prenatal Diagnosis of Severe Aortic Stenosis

Pediatric Cardiology, 1997
We sought to identify echocardiographic markers that might be useful for managing fetuses with significant aortic stenosis. The study was a retrospective review of fetal echocardiographic studies and postnatal outcomes of all fetuses diagnosed with significant aortic stenosis who did not have a hypoplastic left ventricle on the initial echocardiogram ...

Impact of aortic regurgitation on the prognosis of severe aortic stenosis

Heart, 2012
Objective Many patients with aortic stenosis (AS) have coexisting aortic regurgitation (AR). However, few data exist regarding its clinical significance and prognostic value. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of concomitant significant AR on clinical outcomes in patients with non-surgically treated ...

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement for Severe Aortic Stenosis

Critical Care Nursing Quarterly, 2014
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a relatively new procedure for patients with aortic stenosis who are at risk for surgery. Although this procedure was not used in the United States until 2011, it has gained popularity as the preferred alternative treatment and is believed to become the preferred standard treatment in the near future ...

Relation of Aortic Valve Weight to Severity of Aortic Stenosis

The American Journal of Cardiology, 2011
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relation of aortic valve weight to transvalvular gradient and area, with special regard to valve anatomy, size of calcific deposits, gender, and body size. Two hundred forty-two surgically excised stenotic aortic valves of patients (139 men, mean age 72 ± 9 years) who had undergone preoperative cardiac ...
