Incidence and severity of respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in rural Kenyan children identified through hospital surveillance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background.Although necessary for developing a rationale for vaccination, the burden of severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease in children in resource‐poor settings remains poorly defined.

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

Predictive value of combined serum IL-6 with UREA on severity of neonatal pneumonia: an observational study

open access: yesJournal of Laboratory Medicine, 2023
IL-6 is an inflammatory marker and urea nitrogen (UREA) is a common indicator of glomerular filtration function. Their combined detection has predictive value for the severity of neonatal pneumonia.

Severity assessment of healthcare-associated pneumonia and pneumonia in immunosuppression [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 2012
The study compares the ability of the PSI (pneumonia severity index), CURB-65 (confusion, urea >7 mol·L−1, respiratory rate ≥30 breaths·min−1, blood pressure <90 mmHg systolic or ≤60 mmHg diastolic, and age ≥65 yrs), CURB and CRB-65 scales and the Severe Community-Acquired Pneumonia (SCAP) score to predict 30-day mortality in healthcare ...

Targeting Lipopolysaccharide Transport Induces Membrane Lipid Remodeling and Sensitizes Acinetobacter baumannii to Colistin Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies C4 as a lead inhibitor of the Lpt system. Notably, C4 potentiates colistin activity by disrupting LPS transport and remodeling phospholipid homeostasis, revealing a functional interplay between the Lpt and Mla systems. These findings establish a mechanistic link between Lpt inhibition and membrane lipid remodeling, positioning Lpt–

Continuous Professional Oral Health Care Intervention Improves Severe Aspiration Pneumonia

open access: yesCase Reports in Dentistry, 2019
Professional oral health care (POHC) is known to prevent aspiration pneumonia in patients with dysphagia and/or those at the perioperative stage of surgery. However, the effect of POHC on patients suffering from aspiration pneumonia remains unknown. Here,

Nomogram for pneumonia prediction among children and young people with cerebral palsy: A population-based cohort study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
BACKGROUND:Pneumonia is the leading cause of death among children and young people (CYP) with severe cerebral palsy (CP). Only a few studies used nomogram for assessing risk factors and the probability of pneumonia.

Improving survival of children with severe acute malnutrition in HIV-prevalent settings.

open access: yes, 2009
The care of severely malnourished children in sub-Saharan Africa is challenging, especially in HIV-prevalent settings. Recent improvements to facility-based individual case management, and increased community-based management focusing on early ...

Sustained Delivery of a Shingles Subunit Vaccine Overcomes Age‐Related Declines in Humoral and Cellular Immunity Relative to Shingrix

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sustained delivery of a shingles subunit vaccine from an injectable polymer–nanoparticle hydrogel enhanced the potency, durability, and breadth of immune responses in aged mice while minimizing inflammatory cytokine production and reactogenicity. This strategy decouples immunogenicity from reactogenicity and offers a promising approach to improve ...

Harmonizing Rigidity and Flexibility: Embedding COF Quantum Dots Into Extracellular Matrix Gel as Carbon Monoxide Depot for Acoustically Triggered Time‐Programmable Anti‐Infective Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A rigid‑flexible integrated CO depot is engineered by embedding rigid COFQDs into a flexible ECM gel network. The rigid framework enables high‑capacity CO storage and sonodynamic bacterial killing, while the flexible ECM gel controls sustained CO release, collectively eradicating multidrug‑resistant infection and promoting scarless healing.
