Biodegradation of nonylphenol in sewage sludge
Chemosphere, 2005We investigated the effects of various factors on the aerobic degradation of nonylphenol (NP) in sewage sludge. NP (5 mg/kg) degradation rate constants (k1) calculated were 0.148 and 0.224 day(-1) for the batch experiment and the bioreactor experiment, respectively, and half-lives (t(1/2)) were 4.7 and 3.1 days, respectively.

Sewage and Sewage Sludge Treatment
2013Sewage from properties and industries which are connected to the public sewerage system are treated by physical, chemical and biological sewage treatment processes to protect human health and the environment. In this chapter the conveyance of sewage to treatment works by combined or foul sewers is described.

Vermistabilization of primary sewage sludge
Bioresource Technology, 2011An integrated composting-vermicomposting process has been developed for utilization of primary sewage sludge (PSS). Matured vermicompost was used as bulking material and a source of active microbial culture during aerobic activated composting (AAC).

Sewage sludge disintegration by electrocoagulation
International Journal of Environmental Health Research, 2018In this research, reduction of sludge production and improvement of sludge stabilization degree were aimed, and in this regard, the samples received from an urban wastewater treatment plant were subjected to electrocoagulation (EC) as a disintegration technique.

Decontamination of sewage sludges with quicklime
Waste Management & Research, 1985Appropriate disposal of the ever increasing amounts of sludge has become a vital problem to sewage treatment plants. This paper gives both theoretical principles to thermal and chemical inactivation of sludges and experimental data. Bacteriological and parasitological examinations of the sludge were carried out prior to, and following completion of ...

Mycoflora of activated sewage sludge
Mycopathologia, 1976Thirty-eight species of fungi were identified in pure culture after isolation from activated sewage sludge by serial dilution. Nine species and genera were identified that had not been previously reported. In 1963, Cooke (1) published an excellent laboratory guide on the identification of fungi from polluted water, sewage, and sewage treatment systems;

Technological characterization of sewage sludge
Waste Management & Research, 1985Laboratory tests for the technological characterization of sewage sludge are catalogued and reviewed. Procedures presently being tested and evaluated by IRSA (Water Research Institute, C.N.R., Italy) are also discussed. Major attention is addressed to the evaluation of sludge dewaterability, since this operation is both expensive and ...

Self-recycling of sewage sludge as a coagulant and mechanism in sewage sludge dewatering
Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management, 2020The properties of sewage sludge-derived biochar (BC) pyrolyzed at 300–900 °C were characterized, and which exhibited the basic properties of coagulant. When 1 g BC500 was added to 100 mL waste-activated sludge (WAS), the maximum mean settlement rate reached 8.20 mL min−1 within 10 min, and the volume of the settlement with settling time decreased to 13

Current knowledge of sewage sludge is reviewed, particular reference being made to the possible effect on the health of herds of cattle. The following measures should be urgently and seriously considered: more effective watching of sewage disposal; assessments on sewage disposals, related to the costs of alternatives; stricter checks on diffuse sources

In order to better understand land application of sewage sludge, the characterization of heavy metals and organic pollutants were investigated in three different sewage sludges in Shanghai City, China. It was found that the total concentrations of Cd in all of sewage sludge and total concentrations of Zn in Jinshan sewage sludge, as well as those of Zn,
